🌎👫👭👬🌏 An international crowd of like-minded travellers, wine lovers and wine throwers to party with.
San Vino, aka La Batalla de Vino de Haro, aka the Wine Fight of Spain, takes place on the 29th of June every year, in the town of Haro, La Rioja. The fight goes down amongst some of the world’s best red wine vines, where for centuries now locals and visitors have celebrated this tradition by throwing wine on each other.
Stoke Travel is the original tour company visiting Haro and La Rioja for the Spanish Wine Fight, and is San Vino’s quality camping option, with our more-inclusive camping packages, completely open bar, local wine and cheese tasting on your arrival, and more fun as you will be staying with like-minded travellers from all over the world.
*(dates and costs for 2025 combo packages to be confirmed)
The Wine Fight is known as La Batalla de Vino de Haro by the locals, this is the perfect opportunity to visit one of the world’s great red-wine regions and leave after being soaked head-to-toe in the grape juice that isn’t up to the region’s high standards (don’t worry, it’s not a waste).
Stoke Travel’s more-inclusive Wine Fight packages include entry into the battle, your stay in comfortable camping accommodations with camping mats and sleeping bags, an open beer, wine and sangria bar between 10am and 10pm, a delicious brunch with a cooked breakfast buffet and bottomless mimosas each day, Stoke Travel guides to show you where and how to battle, welcome local cheese and wine tasting, plus plenty of red wine to throw.
What is the Haro Wine Fight?
The celebrations find their origins in a centuries-old land dispute between Haro and neighbouring Miranda de Ebro, that over the years descended into the Wine Fight (read more about the Wine Fight’s history here). These days the dispute has been solved, but the Batalla de Vino remains, with locals young and old coming from Haro and the surrounding region to fight with each other and with travellers. The battle is fought on a hillside overlooking La Rioja’s vineyards, and battlers use buckets, water pistols and any other device that can carry and throw wine. And don’t worry, wine lovers, it’s not a waste! This is the wine that wasn’t good enough to be bottled, and when the battle’s over the rivers of wine fun back down the mountain and into the vineyards to fertilise them. The Wine Fight is an up-and-coming Spanish fiesta and one that you must visit if you’re a wine lover, party animal or a lover of unique travelling experiences.

Camping at the Wine Fight
Stoke Travel’s San Vino campsite is the perfect place to party and prepare for the Wine Fight — and to wash away the vino in the on-site pool afterwards. Set by a river at the base of the hills where the battle takes place, surrounded by vineyards, the campsite is where we sleep in pre-erected twin tents, feast on a yummy cooked bottomless brunch together, and party with hundreds of like-minded international travellers, with an unlimited open bar of beer and sangria.
A wine fight in La Rioja, Spain
Adding to this amazing festival’s alure is the fact that it takes place every year amongst the famous red wine vineyards of La Rioja. Renowned for full bodied red wines, the state of La Rioja in general, and the town of Haro in particular, are globally renowned for their world-class red wine production. For lovers of Spanish vino tinto this gives you the perfect opportunity to do guided tours of famous wineries like Muga, Cvne and Ramon de Bilbao, as well as taste innumerable vintages in every bar in town.

La Rioja is the número uno wine making district of Spain, it has over 500 wineries and is only a short distance from Bilbao. If you’ve been lucky enough to find a bottle of La Rioja in your hands you’ll know what we’re talking about! La Batalla del Vino takes place on a hillside vineyard just outside the village of Haro, a walk up the hill from our campsite.
If you choose to combine San Vino Wine Fight Festival 2019 with a stay at our infamous Surf Camp in San Sebastian, then it’s just a 2.5 hour coach trip fuelled mostly by wine drinking and singing. If you’re combining the trip with a Barcelona stay at Costa Brava for example, then the journey is a little longer but that just means even more wine drinking and singing.
Campsite Address
Camping Haro Avenida de Miranda 1 26200 Haro La Rioja
How to get there
Take the bus from Madrid, Barcelona or San Sebastian on the June 28, or make your own way to Haro. Check Omio for the best deals on flights, buses and trains. If you fly choose either Bilbao or Biarritz airports. From Bilbao airport there are regular buses to San Sebastian. To get to San Sebastian from Biarritz International Airport take a French SNCF train to Hendaye, change to the nearby Euskotren station (located just outside the SNCF station) and take a Euskotren to San Sebastian. Each train ride is between 30-40 minutes, with the total train trip cost less than €10. A coach service also exists between Biarritz airport and the Hendaye train station, via Saint-Jean-De-Luz (change buses there). The coach ride is less than one hour and costs about €4. You can then reach Haro from San Sebastian-Donostia by bus or train.
If you accidentally trip and fall in a deep puddle of wine, the only other option apart from drowning is to drink your way to survival.

What should I bring?
Rate this trip
Sunglasses and sunscreen as it gets pretty hot, a pillow and torch for your tent, goggles, condoms, a waterproof camera, swimmers to have a dip in the pool afterwards, old shoes that can be thrown out after the madness, and shampoo if you don’t want your hair stained red for the next month. Oh and don’t forget a towel.

Are there hot showers to wash off my wine-stained body parts?
Rate this trip
Sí, there are showers at the campsite and we highly encourage a rinse off at the end of the day, before you climb in your tent and turn everything you touch purple. You’ll also smell like vinegar at this point which greatly decreases your chance of having someone join you in said purple tent.

What do I wear? Do I need goggles?
Rate this trip
We sell white clothing (€40 for the whole kit) so your fave tee doesn’t turn permanently purple and goggles are also available for those who want to be able to see for the rest of their lives, but sunnies can do the job too.

I went to San Vino with Stoke Travel last year and it was the best festival I have ever been to! The Stoke campsite is within walking distance to the street parties, which go all night, and it has a pool! We partied with the locals and got an authentic Spanish Fiesta experience. The festival itself was incredible! Stoke has buses going right up to the where the Wine Fight begins and then you can spend as long as you like there. I would definitely recommend this festival and Stoke Travel to anyone.

Went to San Vino this year and had a blast. The stoke team was just that, frothing on pure stoke! Crazy times in the small traditional village and the campsite was on point! Already signed up for Tomatina and next year’s San vino. Cheers to the Stoke team.
