Wine throwing antics at San Vino
The quaint town of Haro, located in the Basque region of Spain is usually pretty sedate, that is until June hits, and with it comes one of the weirdest, and in our opinion one of the most brilliant festivals; a giant wine fine! Yes, you heard us right! The festival itself originates from an annual feast where pilgrims celebrated the patron saint, san Pedro, evolving over the years in to this awesome festival. The party starts on the 28th June when locals and tourists alike descend upon the streets to party the night away before heading up to the mountains the next day (29th) ready for the wine fight festivities to commence. Revellers armed with all manner a wine slinging weapons including buckets, water guns and even balloons re-fuel from water trucks that are stationed around the area. Once suitably drenched in wine it’s time to descend down the mountain to carry on the celebrations with local musicians providing the sound track to a night of traditional dancing and lots (… and lots) of wine consumption. Your hair and skin may be a spectacular shade of purple for a few days, but you are guaranteed an unforgettable hen weekend!
Dates: 28th – 30th June 2016, with Batalla del Vino (the wine battle) on June 29th
